INSURANCE

At Saskatoon Movers our workers, managers and entire staff do everything possible to ensure that no damages occur. Unfortunately, with all the preparation and safeguarding, occasionally accidents still happen. This is why we offer insurance options to help protect your belongings.

If your valuables are estimated under $50,000, several insurance options are available to you. If your possessions are valued above $50,000 and consist of items such as electronics, pianos or artwork, or if you have an individual item valued at more than $5,000, please discuss this with the project manager for your move.

Standard Valuation Coverage
This is the base coverage provided to you by Saskatoon Movers at no cost to you. In the event that an accident occurs, you will be entitled to $.60 per pound per item. However this normally does not provide enough protection for your possessions. If you would like to upgrade your insurance coverage please contact your project manager and he or she will provide you with an accurate insurance estimate based on the value of your belongings.

Full Replacement Value Insurance
You can purchase full replacement insurance for your belongings. Two insurance companies that this insurance are: Moving Insurance.com and Baker International. Full replacement coverage is a more inclusive coverage than regular standard valuation insurance. It generally offers more options regarding deductible levels and the amount of coverage. If your possessions are valued above $50,000 and consist of valuable items such as electronics, pianos and artwork, or if you have an individual item valued at more than $5,000, please ask you Project Manager about full replacement value insurance or contact one of the companies mentioned above.

Certificate of Insurance
Saskatoon Movers maintains more than one million dollars worth of General Liability insurance in addition to required Disability and Worker's Compensation insurance coverage. Almost all commercial offices require some form of insurance certificate before any work is performed. Please contact us to discuss what insurance may be appropriate for your particular circumstances. All insurance claims to Saskatoon Movers dealing with possessions or damages to the home will be subject to a $250 deductible. Deductibles and coverage will vary depending on the type of insurance that is chosen. Keep in mind that most homes already have insurance that covers your belongings. Please contact your insurance company to discover what coverage you are already insured with.

Protection Plans

Before moving you should always speak with your home insurance agent to find out if your existing policy covers "Goods in Transit". Saskatoon Movers is not an insurance agent. Our Protection Plans are designed to compliment your existing coverage, not act as independent coverage.

Our standard valuation coverage is an integral part of every move we do. It is included with the price of your move, and covers you from the time we arrive at your home, until the time the truck leaves your new place.

The standard valuation coverage protects your belongings for a maximum of $0.60 per pound per item.

For instance, a 100 lb dresser would be covered for up to $60.00. This would not cover the costs of a new dresser, but it would easily pay for the required repair of any scratch or dent. Our Extra Protection Plans offer added protection of your household goods. You can purchase Increased Valuation coverage at any time before your move begins.

Increased Valuation coverage is based on the declared value of your cargo. Declared Value is the entire combined value of all the goods included in your shipment.

Increased Valuation is priced at $60.00 per $10,000.00 Declared Value. The minimum purchase is $10,000 Declared Value, and the maximum purchase is $5.00 per pound liability or $50,000 Declared Value, whichever is less.

For example, if your shipment has been estimated to be 5000 lbs, then the maximum Declared Value of your shipment would be $25,000 (5000 lbs x $5.00 /lb). The charge for $25,000 Declared Value at $5.00 per pound would be $150.00 ($25,000 / $10,000 = 2.5, 2.5 x $60.00 = $150.00). If an item is damaged it could be repaired, replaced or paid out based on $5 per pound/item. 100lb item could pay up to $500.

Another example is: if your shipment has been estimated at 5000 lbs, you could declare the value at $2 per pound if you chose. (5000 lbs x $2.00 /lb). The charge for $10,000 Declared Value at $2.00 per pound would be $60.00 ($10,000 / $10,000 = 1, 1 x $60.00 = $60.00). If an item is damaged it could be repaired, replaced or paid out based on $2 per pound/item. 100lb item could pay up to $200.

You can choose the value of the payout at $1, $2, $3, $4 or $5 depending on the weight of what you are moving.

Our Protection plans do not replace existing insurance. Your items are covered on the basis of their age and condition they are in when we arrive at your home. We will have the option to repair or provide you with the replacement value.

If our Claims Adjustor determines that replacement is necessary, then a 5 year-old television would be replaced with a 5 year-old television or equivalent value, not a brand new television. Saskatoon Movers maximum liability cannot exceed $5.00 per pound.

If you require coverage that goes beyond our maximum amount then please speak with your home insurance agent or talk to one of our customer service agents about third Party Insurance.

Items not covered

There are several items which are not covered under our Protection Plans. This is due to the design and/or construction of certain items, company policies or government regulations.

Saskatoon Movers Moving Company does not assume liability for the following items:

  • Any and all damaged items or areas that may result by the customer's decision to move an article against the movers' advice.
  • Mattresses will not be covered if the customer refuses the use/payment of mattress bags.
  • Any type of flooring, walls or doors, etc. if movers have advised against moving an item due to excessive weight or space restrictions/confinement.
  • Customer Packed Boxes - VERY IMPORTANT.
    • Packed boxes are covered only if they have been packed by Saskatoon Movers employees; boxes packed by the customer will not be covered.
    • In the event that a customer-packed box is lost or destroyed, compensation will be determined based on an average weight of 35 pounds per box, REGARDLESS of actual box contents.
  • Pressboard/Particle Board Furniture.
    • If at all possible, disassemble any pressboard furniture and package fasteners separately.
  • Halogen Pole Lamps.
    • Disassemble and place halogen pole lamps into boxes to protect them. Always remove bulbs.
  • Live Plants or Perishables.
    • Avoid packing food or plants whenever possible. Use boxes with open tops or Wardrobe boxes for plants.
  • Electronics & Musical Instruments (Internal Mechanisms).
    • This includes the internal workings of all electronic items such as televisions, stereos, computers, computer accessories and all musical instruments.
    • Have all of your electronics and musical instruments professionally prepared for moving beforehand.
  • Unpacked Glass.
    • This includes glass-framed artwork, fish-tanks, tabletops, and mirror glass.
    • Glass must be pre-packed by a Saskatoon Movers agent to be fully covered.
  • Note: In the event that an insurance claim arises, we will obtain three separate quotes from outside vendors if necessary. The lowest of the three quotes will be used in a cash settlement to close the claim.
Special Considerations

Either you or someone approved by you MUST be present at both pick-up and delivery in order for your shipment to be fully covered. Usually it is unnecessary to remain present for the entire moving process. However, you must inform the driver of the moving van that you will be leaving before either the pick-up or the delivery is completed.

If your shipment is being delivered into Saskatoon Movers storage and will remain there for more than 60 days, it is very important that either you or someone approved by you is present while the shipment is being unloaded.

Upon signing the completed bill, you are confirming that all items listed have been received in apparent good order.
In the event that you are unable to take delivery of your goods at the scheduled delivery time for any reason, then your shipment will be held for you at your own risk.

Any objects or artifacts of extraordinary value must be declared to us prior to shipping and specifically agreed to in writing on both the invoice and the inventory.

WE DO NOT TRANSPORT EXPLOSIVES OR
DANGEROUS OR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS.

Items included in this list include but are not limited to: propane tanks, gasoline, diesel, oil, paint, flammable solvents, aerosols, ammunition, commercial explosives, fireworks, and all materials classified as a biohazard.

If any of these goods are transported without our knowledge then you immediately void any and all liability by our company for all damages. Also you will be held responsible for any damages, fines, warehousing costs, and delays incurred by our company resulting from the transport of these materials.

For more information on Dangerous Goods, visit the Transport Canada website.

DELAYS IN SERVICE

At or sometime before the time of loading, you will be given a date and/or time period within which your goods will be delivered to you.

Excluding any circumstances beyond our control, if we do not deliver your belongings within the time period that was specified then we will accept liability only for reasonable food and lodging expenses incurred by you and your family as a result.

Receipts must be provided before compensation will be given.

If you are unable to take delivery of your goods at the scheduled delivery time, you may be held liable for storage and handling charges.

SUBMITTING A CLAIM

The claims process follows a few simple steps;

  1. To begin a claim, you must first provide written notice (letter, fax or e-mail) of your claim within 45 days of completing your move. Claims will not be processed if submitted by telephone.
  2. Please forward digital pictures of the damage to saskatoonmovers@sasktel.net or mail pictures of the damaged area to our office.

Claim notices must include: shipment date, customer name, shipment origin, shipment destination, and all particulars of claim.

Keep in mind that your claim must be received within 45 days of move completion in order to be considered.

  1. After your report has been received, a Claims Adjustor will investigate your claim. This process may take time so please be patient. The Adjustor will need to examine the move paperwork, speak with the crew or crews involved with your move, determine fault and responsibility, confirm any price estimates you have submitted, and contact repair companies as needed. The $250 deductible per move will be deducted from your claim if a payout is necessary.
  2. You will be contacted as soon as the Claims Adjustor has reached a decision regarding your claim.
